Housing
The Catskill region has a blend of housing that reflects its rural nature. The median age of homes in the area is estimated by the 2000 census to be between 35-40 years old, but today many newer vacation and weekend homes dot the area and co-exist with the older farmhouses and Victorians that still remain.
Median Home Value (2004)*
Delaware County: $107,291
Greene County: $127,758
Otsego: $106,504
Schoharie: $117,739
Sullivan: $125,934
Ulster: $144,506
While the area saw an influx of growth in the late 1980’s, concerns about development issues and the impact on the natural resources of the area have always been at the forefront when it comes to housing development. Recent efforts have focused on Smart Growth in dealing with community development.
There are also a number of organizations in the area who work with low and moderate income families to provide housing assistance and programs to help ensure an affordable stock of homes remain. Interested people can contact the local county government office for referrals. A list is included on the Helpful links page of this site.
